By the end of the twentieth century the dream of real cultural progress through enlightenment and science had been severely damaged. The immense scientific and technological progress of the previous centuries could not hide the fact that, in the Affairs of Men, the veneer of civilisation was still only wafer thin. The war system is just one of the problems that reflect exactly how fragile the foundations of modernity actually are. The ferocity of the wars of the twentieth century and, in particular, the development of weapons of an omnicidal nature bear witness to how primitive and dangerous some of those foundations are.

The Collapse of the War System looks at the ideas of a number of individuals who have rejected the cultural paradigm of violence - Tolstoy, Russell, Gandhi and Einstein. These individuals have taken up the debate on war and violence exactly where the philosophers of the enlightenment left that debate hanging. They have critically undermined the ‘childish absurdities’ of the paradigm of the culture of violence and have laid the foundations for demystifying the war system.

The period that will see the final collapse of the war system will be a time of great danger and great opportunity, like all such periods of change. The pattern of the transformation cannot be managed or predicted. The collapse will be finely balanced between disaster and survival. The dangers arise from the fact that the collapse of the war system is long past the date when that collapse would have inflicted only limited damage on our cultural systems.

However the real opportunities from a post war cultural system are enormous because, quite simply, the potentiality of peace is far greater than the potentiality of violence. It is now self evident that the collapse of the war system is a vital pre-condition for the enormous cultural effort that will be necessary to address the critical environmental and social problems of our times.
